What would grow to be The Purcell Company was founded in Hershey, Pa in 1968 by Richard “Dick” Purcell in a double car garage. His brother, Milt Purcell, would join him one year later after serving his time in the armed forces. Together, the brothers ran manual mills and lathes making parts for the then up-and-coming car wash industry, Hershey Foods, and Reese’s. TPC is proud to count Hershey Foods and Reese’s as two of their present-day customers.
The Purcell brothers soon outgrew the double car garage and purchased farmland for their growing business near their Hershey homes. This first building was 5,000 sq. ft. Today, TPC stands on this original plot of land but has developed to 43,000 sq. ft.
In the early 1970’s, Purcell Machine added CNC capabilities to their manual expertise, and their business grew to include Caterpillar, New Holland, and John Deer.
A watershed moment occurred for Purcell Machine in the late 1970’s when the company earned a P.O. from Hershey Foods to build 24 Kiss Wrapping machines. In 1981 an additional 24 Kiss machines were ordered.
In the late 1980’s Milt and Dick founded Eastern Design and Development Corp. (EDDCO) to compliment Purcell Machine Company (PMC). EDDCO had a complete engineering & design department as well as a full assembly area. EDDCO would design and PMC would machine both big and small projects, including “Cup Machines” and “Drop Roll Sets” - two products still in demand today!
In 1989, at the age of 18, Dick’s son Steve, joined the family business and began to learn the machining trade. Today, Steve is the Vice President of The Purcell Company.
In the early 2000’s, EDDCO and PMC were merged “under one roof” at the original Purcell Machine site forming The Purcell Company (TPC), a true "turn key" operation.
TPC faced its darkest hour when Dick Purcell passed in 2004. Showing the drive, determination, and talent that allowed both brothers to establish the business originally, Milt continued to steer the company to success as he grieved for his brother.
